Christmas in Spain

We are getting close to Christmas break and I wanted to give you some highlights of how Spain celebrates Christmas that are different from those traditions we have in the U.S.

1.  Christmas Eve is a night spent usually going to mass, followed by a dinner with the family.
2.  Christmas is less about presents and more a family and religious holiday.
3.  Children receive gifts from the 3 wise men on epiphany, January 6th. (in Puerto Rico and Mexico some children fill shoe boxes w/ grass pulled from the  lawn for the camels and presents are placed in the empty box by the Magi, much like our stockings)

How do you celebrate Christmas?  Is it very different from the "American tradition?"  Would you consider adopting new traditions?

Podcasts for further learning

Hello to all!  During Parent/Teacher conferences some of you were interested in ways that you or your son or daughter could continue to practice Spanish outside of the classroom.  Here are two podcasts that will help you do just that!  You could download them to your ipod, listen to them on the website, or burn them to a CD.  Anyway you do it, it will help you to refresh what you've learned in class and continue to improve your Spanish proficiency.

Blogger unblocked!

Finally we have resolved our technology issues and we can use blogger from now on!  Some of the other movies, and clips are still located at purpleinksenora.edublogs.org but the majority will find there home here!

Can you believe that we have only three more weeks to go!  I will be so sad to see all of you move on, but we have really learned a lot in this short trimester.  Keep up the good work!

edublog

I'm officially sick of having to update the blog from home because blogger is blocked.  It seems like most of the time we can access edu blog from both home and school, so I'll be switching over this week.  Everything on this blog will stay, but new posts will be posted here: purpleinksenora.edublogs.org. Nos vemos el martes!

First Week!

Well we made it!  Can you believe the first week is over?!????  So far we've just begun to cover basic conversation such as:  ¿Cómo estás?  Muy bien, gracias.  ¿Cómo te llamas?  Me llamo Señora Smith; buenos días, etc. . . .  We also have SPANISH NAMES, which I hope everyone is pleased with.  I've had quite a few students who have impressed me with their pronunciation!  WOW!  This is going to be a great year.  Keep up the good work.

If you're reading this, I have a bonus punch question which you may answer on Monday as you come in:  How do you say:  Nice to meet you?  **** HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

¡Bienvenidos! Welcome!

Hola mis estudiantes!  You found the website!  So glad to have you in class and am so excited about the opportunity for you to learn Spanish in Middle School.  Below are some supplies you may want for this class and links to some great websites you could check out.

Supplies for the Class:
-folder w/ 3 prongs or 3 ring binder
-lined paper to take notes clipped into your folder or notebook
-pencil

think about investing in:
-a Spanish dictionary (you can find them @ Meijer, Walmart, Big Lots, or order a used one from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Oxford-Color-Spanish-Dictionary-Plus/dp/0199218943/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1281466638&sr=8-1 )

If you decide not to buy a Spanish dictionary you can use my FAVORITE dictionary online:  www.wordreference.com

remember NEVER use an online translator, this is considered cheating!

Can't wait to get to know you all more! chao!  <3 Señora
